Johannesburg: Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown was a abuzz with hip hop heads from all over the world who had descended to the city of gold on 27 April 2018 on friday to celebrate Freedom Day with South Africans.
The Back To The City Festival has been taking place over a decade and it has grown to be the biggest hip hop festival in the African continent. The 2018 edition was nothing short of fun, swag, dance, and of course music.
With a hot line up which had South Africa’s hottest MCs sharing the stage in celebration of freedom and hip hop culture, this saw; Cassper Nyovest, Riky Rick, Okmalumkoolkat, Patty Monroe, Shane Eagles, Gigi Lamayne, Rouge, Prwiddy Uggly, Kid X and many others shared and set the stage ablaze. Pro-kid a.k.a PRO made a comeback and performed some of his classics such as Celebrate, Wozo’ babona, Ungaphel’ umoya, Djs Switch, ZanD, Slique, Kenzhero and some of the most revered hip hop Djs in the land of Mzansi made the 23 000 crowd dance and sing along to the songs.
American rapper Pharaohe Monch was the international act this year, the Queens, New York City rapper is an underground hip hop artists who is known for his complex lyrical delivery and rhyme style, Monch has a lengthy profile which has earned him the respect of many in the game. Amongst other American rappers at the festival was Brooklyn, New York rapper SkyZoo.
The Back To The City Festival reached it’s 12th year and according to the festival’s founders the show will end in three years time. It is not yet clear why the show is left with just few years to till it ends. There are rumours that the show will change its name and become bigger and better.
