Matlosana”Klerksdorp”: Brighton Phiri is a young businessman who is passionate about taking care of the enviroment, he joined 350.org in June (2017), and became a campaigner and event organiser for this global organisation which is advocating for environmental cleanliness.

Whitestone College Students, Kings and Queens Modelling Academy and different other organisations were part of the event.

The 350.org works with everyone and anyone who is passionate and willing to take action on climate change.

On Friday 25 May a #Breakfree event was held at the Klerksdorp Museum in the afternoon. The event was a workshop and campaign aimed at urging companies to divert from using fossil fuel companies and move towards renewable energy.

The organisation relies on the masses to have a common goal of moving towards safe sources of energy and reduction of carbon emissions.
The name 350 comes from the target of ‘350 parts per million (ppm)’ of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. Currently carbon dioxide concentration is hovering above 400 ppm,the highest in over 650 000 years. Carbon dioxide emissions are the chief cause of global warming .Global temperature averages are also rising ,17 of the 18 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001.

The sea level is rising by an average of 3.2 millimetres per year, and this will increase the occurrences of floods across the world.
The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil,  and gas) for energy is the main contributor to the rapidly rising level of carbon dioxide that is driving climate change. Fossil fuel extraction, processing and burning also has other negative impact on health and affects communities. For example, air pollution kills around 7 million people a year.

In recent times Johannesburg has been hit by flash floods which caused damage to infrastructure and property. Cape Town is also affected by the effects of climate, and currently going through a period of drought.

Other countries which took part in the #Breakfree 350.org are: Kenya, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Ghana.
