Matlosana”Klerksdorp”: Police had their hands full trying to control angry taxi drivers who were baying for the blood of Nigerians on Monday morning in the Klerksdorp CBD.

The chaos began on sunday after it is alleged that Nigerians killed a taxi driver in Pienaarsdorp in the early hours of sunday morning.

The taxi drivers took matters into their own hands and stormed Pienaarsdorp and this resulted in five buildings being torched, the infamous buildings are apparently used for drug trafficking and prostitution by nigerians. Last year a Nigerian was arrested after a brothel was discovered in the same area.

The taxi drivers accused police of working with Nigerians, they say Nigerians are doing as they wish and the law enforcement is pulling its legs to combat the drug trafficking and prostitution in Pienaarsdorp.

The CBD came to a complete shut down, smoke could be seen from miles away, retail shops closed and some Nigerians shops at Noord Street were looted and vandalized, tyres burned, roads blocked with large stones and tree branches.

Police had their hands full trying to control the situation, teargas and rubber bullets were used to disperse the fuming taxi drivers, this angered the taxi drivers who accused police of being unfair, “one taxi driver said! “Last year nigerians had a march in the CBD, and went to the police station armed with weapons, the police never shot at them, but they are shooting at us, the people of this country for venting our frustrations” around lunch time the N12 was closed, taxis were not operating and this left commuters stranded.

Twelve taxi drivers have been arrested since the chaos started, their colleagues demanded for their immediate release and vowed not to stop with the demonstrations till the arrested taxi drivers are released. Meanwhile Santaco a taxi association, has called for calm to allow police to continue with investigations.

There is a whatsapp voice note doing the rounds on social media, it is apparent that taxi operators from Kanana and Khuma together with the reinforcement of miners are going to join the Klerksdorp-Jouberton taxi route to march against police.

The situation remains tense and the police are on high alert.
