Jouberton – The City of Matlosana Municipality has given the go ahead to the construction of a new Taxi Rank in Jouberton, opposite Tower Mall, the project was handed over to the contractor on 22 May 2020.
This came after a further easing of the lockdown regulations from level 4 to alert level 3 by government, a site office has been setup, and currently quantative land surveying is taking place, with earth works digging the rubble to make the land conducive for construction.
Ward 37 Councillor, Lazarus “Lazy” Sekgothe has welcomed the flagship development, which is but one of other projects earmarked for the N12, on the Jouberton and Alabama Precinct.
The councillor says the project will not become a white elephant, “We want to ensure that this project becomes sustainable not only for the taxi industry but the entire community, more in particular SMMEs, I’m currently in talks with the Municipality’s LED ” Local Economic Development” to ensure that we build stalls for SMMEs.
The Jouberton Taxi Rank will come with Admin Block, Waiting Areas, Ablutions and Trading Areas.
Jouberton Taxi Association, Klerksdorp District Taxi Association and The Jouberton Amalgamated Taxi Association are part of the steering committee of the project which will be handed over to them after its completion.
The taxi industry will oversee the operation of the taxi rank.
A joint venture of the project will see a local company get 30% of the project and another 30% will go to subcontracting and the employment of locals.
The project is estimated to complete in the next 18 months, the councillor has urged the community not to be influenced by those who have nefarious motives to discredit the primary intension of the project which is solely township economic revitalization.
Meanwhile construction of a stadium in Khuma Township, Stilfontien has also begun, it also comes with Fencing, Gaurd House, Grand Stands, Sports Field, and Courts the projected period of the stadium is a total of 18 months.
