Cape Town – Government will beef up the SANDF with a total of 70 000 more soldiers on to the streets in order to enforce the lockdown – 2, 820 soldiers were deployed on 2 April 2020 to assist the Saps and traffic police with roadblocks and maintaining law and order in the country.
According to EWN, Mr Cyril Xaba Co-Chairperson of Parliament’s defence committee confirmed that the Joint standing committee on defence has received a letter from the president and currently in convergence to discuss and consider other issues.
This is in response to the increase in the number of Covid-19 infections which prompts government to tightened its measures to curb the further scourge of the virus.
The revised expenditure for the deployment of soldiers now stands at R4.5 Billion – The deployment which began on 2 April is expected to last until 26 June.
