Johannesburg – The intricate documentary is a look at the influence of the Gupta family into the administration of the country and former president Jacob Zuma.
It was produced by Rehad Desai, Anita Khanna and Zivia Desai Keiper, and has already earned a title as one of the best documentaries ever produced in the country.
Leon Van Nierop in rapport hailed the documentary as “Nothing short of remarkable the definitive of speaking truth to power so that this can never be allowed to happen again”.
It was co-directed by Emmy winner Mark J Kaplan.
The compelling details of “How to steal a country” digs deep into the Guptagate Scandal- that rocked South Africa for the better part of the last decade.
The Guptas who came to South Africa in 1992, rose to fame as business people and subsequently gained enough power to influence government and top political figures in the country.
As editor Ferial Haffajee puts it in the documentary, “They came here as traders. They sold shoes out of the boot of their car… And they left here in a jet as multi-billionaires.”
Nothing could make this influential family more controversial than lending at Waterkloof Airbase for a family wedding in 2013, in which hundreds bord a plane from India to South Africa.
This scandal triggered more interest into the family and soon more stories surfaced about the family, former President Jacob Zuma, government and State owned entreprises.
It would also reveal as Investigative Journalist Thanduxolo Jika described as “Unabated looting – to which they estimate close to a trillion the whole state capture debacle cost the country”. A country that has got the highest unemployment rate, the highest rate of people who live in poverty. A trillion could have changed their lives.”
